Win of the Week

Welcome to the first Win of the Week for 2015!  I’d love to hear what’s going well for YOU and your kiddos this week!

This week’s win was HUGE for me.  We switched the kids’ rooms, tore up carpet, and put Isla in a big girl bed.  Holy stuff, batman!  It’s a lot!  But we got the first phase done, and although the second phase is just as huge (painting, refinishing floors, switching closets, building some shelving/storage and a loft), the end of the first phase means Jude can start sleeping in the crib in Isla’s room soon and will be out of my room!  I’m a little bittersweet on that, but I’m super eager to get to sleep in my own bed without waking up to every little squeak and holler.  Hopefully Isla won’t start waking up to every little squeak and holler, right?

Here are a few photos of the process.  It doesn’t look overwhelming at all, right?

Sometimes the positive aspects of motherhood get swept away in the deluge of busyness, discipline, the day-to-day grind, and the bigger burdens that weigh us down.  Focusing on the little wins can be a great way to re-center and come back to what matters most.  So that’s what today is – a celebration of motherhood victories, whether they be big or small.  I’d love to hear yours in the comments!

This week, my win was simple.  Today, I threw a birthday party for fourth grade boys.  Do you know how chaotic fourth grade boys are?  And then, I was vomited on.  Twice.  On my bare skin, people.  I was already no fan of pork chops, but let me be the first to tell you they look way worse the second time around.

All this in four hours.

Here’s to a new week with more calm and less disgustingness, yes? 😉

This week’s win happened tonight.  I don’t always linger long enough with Gabe.  Things get busy, he does his own thing, and it’s easy to go our separate ways.  Tonight, though, was different.  At bedtime, I snuggled into his bed and waited for him to finish in the bathroom.  When he came in, he crawled in beside me and read a book for about an hour.  It wasn’t quality talking time or anything like that.  We just lingered there together, much like I used to when he was much smaller and afraid to stay by himself.

It was so lovely!

Sometimes I get to today and feel like, “Meh.  I didn’t have any wins.”  But the point is to celebrate the small things, to acknowledge that the everyday stuff is hard and valuable and important.  So I’m forcing myself to pick something, no matter how small.

This week, Gabe wasn’t late for school.  We’re not usually late so this isn’t bizarre, but if you knew me in other avenues of my life, you’d realize how good this is.  I have a penchant for running late to everything.  I’m not super late – usually just a few minutes.  To many of my other events, I arrive just after the scheduled time.  I’m sure it’s annoying to others and I always intend to be on time, but I just can’t ever seem to get out of my own way to move quickly enough.

For school, though, I do a pretty good job of making it on time.  I think Gabe has only had one tardy all term!  That’s definitely a win for me.

I’ve felt pretty depleted and behind this week, so I was especially proud of how, on one of my busier nights this week while Tahd and Gabe were off at judo, Isla and I made homemade play dough together.  Consider these points…

A) She’d never played with play dough before

B) Homemade play dough, people.

C) Do you know how messy a two-year-old and play dough can be?

I’m totally patting myself on the back with this one, for sure. 😉

This week, I won big with sleep – I went to bed before 2:00 AM multiple times and I got one really good nap.  I’ve been a wreck in the sleep department for a long time now.  I can’t get much done during the day because a certain little person never sleeps and usually wants to be held, so I stay up way too late after he goes to bed to make up for it.  There must be a happy medium, but I haven’t found it yet.  I’m hoping I find it, or maybe hoping he figures out this whole sleep thing.  But that might be asking for a lot!  😉

For now, I’ll take what I got, and I’m reveling in the feeling of being slightly more rested!

This week, I survived.  Perhaps I’m setting the bar a little low, but Jude’s naps have gone from bad to worse, down to about 20 minutes once or twice a day from his luxuriant 45 minutes twice a day.  Secondary win: on no day did I cry about this.  I wanted to, but I didn’t. 😉

This week’s win was playing Settlers of Catan with Gabe.  If you haven’t played, it’s an intricate strategy game in which you collect resources and build settlements to collect points.  Gabe and I love the game, but it’s definitely an investment of time, something we haven’t had lately.  We usually watch a movie on Friday evenings, but this week he suggested a game instead, and since he mentioned it early and he’d been asking to play for weeks, I was glad we could finally oblige.  I’d rather play a game with him than a movie any day!

My win this week involves the seventy billion dirty diapers I changed.  No pictures.  You’re welcome.

We’ve been having some problems that have led to a regimen of lots of prune juice and Miralax, and things seem to be going in the right direction this week.  Which means – between my two in diapers – I’m pretty sure I’ve changed a minimum of 30 dirty diapers in 7 days.  So I guess seventy billion was a small exaggeration, but anytime you change 30+ dirty diapers in one week, I think it’s cause for celebration.  And maybe a glass of wine? 😉

I had a hard time thinking of my win this week, which I think is exactly the point of this exercise – to focus on the high points rather than let them get swept away underneath layers of busyness and to-do lists.  I finally settled on this…

Checklists.  Our before and after school routines had been a mess, and out of sheer desperation a few weeks ago, I created checklists for Gabe and me to help minimize conflict and keep us on track.  This week, with almost no prompting from me, Gabe did all his jobs in a super timely manner.  It’s a tiny little thing, but it makes a huge difference in the tone that’s set for our day.

Now, if only I could get all my own list items checked off each day! 😉

How about you?  What went well for you this week?  What did you try that worked?  What made you feel proud, excited, or fulfilled?  I’d love to hear about it and cheer you on in the comments!
